Source-to-sea relationships

Every drop of water that falls on California eventually reaches the ocean — carrying with it whatever it encountered along the way. Understanding source-to-sea relationships means understanding that decisions made in the Sierra Nevada affect the Monterey Bay.

Runoff and pollution prevention

Agricultural runoff, urban stormwater, and industrial discharge are the primary sources of water quality impairment in California. Prevention is more effective and less expensive than remediation. Riparian buffers, cover crops, and stormwater management are proven tools.

Wetlands and estuaries

California has lost more than 90% of its historic wetlands. What remains provides flood protection, water filtration, carbon storage, and nursery habitat for hundreds of species. Restoration is possible and has been demonstrated at scale.

Kelp-forest ecology

Kelp forests are among the most productive ecosystems on Earth. They depend on cold, nutrient-rich water, low urchin pressure, and the presence of predators — including sea otters — to maintain their structure. Their loss has cascading effects on fisheries, coastlines, and carbon.

Responsible wildlife viewing

Sea otters, harbor seals, and shorebirds are sensitive to human disturbance. Maintain at least 60 feet from sea otters. Do not approach haul-out sites. Keep dogs leashed near coastal habitat. Chronic disturbance affects foraging, pupping, and survival.

Boating and recreation impacts

Boat traffic, anchor damage, and noise pollution affect marine mammals, seagrass beds, and kelp forests. Slow down in sensitive areas. Use designated mooring buoys where available. Avoid anchoring in kelp or seagrass.

Habitat restoration

Kelp reseeding, urchin removal, riparian planting, and wetland restoration are all proven techniques with documented results. Restoration requires sustained funding, community engagement, and monitoring. The knowledge of how to do this exists.

Community and Indigenous ecological knowledge

Indigenous communities have maintained relationships with California waterways for thousands of years. Their ecological knowledge is not supplementary to Western science — it is a distinct and valuable body of understanding. Engagement must be genuine, not extractive, and must respect sovereignty.
